Course Description

Terminology, definitions and principles, availability and the importance of maintenance to availability. Types and choice of maintenance. Maintenance control. Organisation of maintenance, reliability centred maintenance (RCM), total productive management (TPM) and maintenance efficiency. Maintenance strategies, operation and life cycle costs (LCC). Spare parts management.

Survey of performance concept and methods for performance monitoring. Organisation of performance monitoring. Basics of vibration theory and vibration analysis, mathematical basis, principles of measurement, analytical methods. Theoretical basis for thermodynamic performance monitoring and output monitoring. Oil analyses, wear mechanisms and analytic methods. Outlines of other non-destructive methods of inspection.

Trend analyses and diagnostics. Presentation of programmes for performance monitoring and fault diagnoses based on measurements.

Assessment Methods

The final course grade is calculated thus:
Final assessment (final examination) 70 %
Continuous assessment (exercises) 30 %

At least 80% of the exercises must be completed and approved in order to sit the final examination.
