Introduction

Counselling is a broad concept, and incorporates contemporary themes such as advising, coaching, workshops, teamwork etc. The Norwegian Directorate for Education and Training establishes guidelines on qualification requirements for advisors and the right to receive necessary guidance in selecting occupational goals.

- The Career Counselling study programme starts 17th September 2009 at Notodden; places are still available.

• The workplace as an arena for learning and development.
• Network building and skills development between people who have counselling responsibilities in both the public and private sectors.

The objectives of Career Counselling:

• Job-related counselling and educational guidance for different people.
• Tools to achieve personal development for people seeking employment.
• Stimulating the individual to explore, develop and express personal interests and potential.
• People seeking advice must be encouraged to make independent decisions and create plans for their own educational and professional careers.

A stage-of-life approach within the fields of employment and education:

• The requirements in this field with respect to basic education, higher education and in the job market.
• A rapidly shifting job market will sometimes require job applicants to redefine their objectives and adapt.
• People with functional disabilities, those under rehabilitation following illness or people with bilingual backgrounds require specialised counselling to meet their needs.

Teaching and learning methods in Career Counselling:

The study programme runs over 2.5 semesters; lectures are given for a period of 2 semesters; the last submission of work by students is at the start of the 3rd semester.

The study programme 2009-2010 will be concluded at the beginning of August 2010.

• The workshops will be held at the Notodden campus, Telemark University College, from roughly 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
• Number of workshops: 4 for module 1 and 3 for module 2.
• The workshops run over 2 days, with the exception of the first workshop.

Planned dates for the workshops (we reserve the right to make changes):

• 1st workshop: Thursday 17th September 2009 – start of the study programme!
• 2nd workshop: Thursday and Friday 15th – 16th October 2009
• 3rd workshop: Thursday and Friday 19th - 20th November 2009
• 4th workshop: Thursday and Friday 14th and 15th January 2010
• The remaining dates will be given later.

Teaching and learning methods:

• The study programme is practice-oriented.
• It takes as its starting point the participants’ own experiences in counselling situations.
• In the workshops, teaching and learning methods will alternate between exercises, group work, presentations and discussions.
• In between the workshops participants will work on programme assignments related to the workshop’s thematic content and the participants’ work at their own workplaces.

• Dependant on sufficient number of applicants; changes may be made.
