Introduction

The one-year program in information management provides a practical introduction to central subjects of information technology (ICT) office automation tools, operating systems, databases, web-publishing, programming, computer networks, data and multimedia. The program is identical to the first year of the bachelor's degree program in computer science and bachelor's degree program in information systems. Students can transfer to these programs after completion of the one-year program.

Target Group and Admission Requirements

The target group is students with an interest in information technology and applications of ICT. The program may be combined with, for example, economic and administrative studies, natural sciences and environmental studies, and languages in a combination Bachelor’s degree. It may also be used as a supplementary program for students who have a degree in teaching. It is also suitable for students who wish to improve their understanding and use of ICT at a workplace. Applicants must meet general admission requirements or possess prior experiential learning, and 2MX, 2MY or 3MZ.

Aim of the Programme

The goal of the program is to provide students with a practical introduction to the main techniques, methods and tools used in ICT.

Learning outcome

A graduate candidate should have the following learning outcomes:
Knowledge:

• basic knowledge of key ICT topics like web publishing, multimedia, ICT in organizations and society, databases, operating systems, computer networks, information security and programming

Skills in:

• use of office automation tools (word processing, spreadsheet, presentation tool)
• use of the SQL query language and data modeling for design and use of databases
• use of publishing tools, HTML and CSS for production and publishing of Web pages with multimedia content
• use of Linux and Windows operating systems
• basic Java programming
• basic management and operation of Windows Server in networks

General competencies:

• have a good basis for using ICT in other disciplines

Curriculum and structure

The normal duration of the program is 1 year and it may be included as part of a bachelor's degree. The program is divided into courses of one semester, and is identical to the first year of the programs for bachelor's degree in computer science and bachelor's degree in information systems.

Internationalization

The one-year program in information management is not suitable for internationalization.

Teaching and Learning Methods

Lectures, practical exercises in a computer laboratory, smaller projects. Mandatory assignments will be given in most subjects.

Theory and Practical Training

The study programme has a practical approach, but also focuses on basic theory in the field. Modern ICT-tools and realistic cases/examples will be used extensively.

Assessment Methods

The student’s knowledge will be assessed in all of the courses. Lettered grades A-F (where F represents a failing grade) will be used. A variety of assessment forms will be used; for details please refer to the individual course descriptions.
