Course Description

A satisfactory competence in English requires the ability to produce long and coherent texts on a wide variety of subjects. The course emphasises practical training in writing well-formulated texts in varied contexts, with particular emphasis on literary essays.

Teaching and Learning Methods

The course is taught every other autumn semester. It includes 2 two-day workshops (held jointly with the course The Contemporary English-Speaking World 2009N), online lectures and supporting material posted on Fronter. The workshops and online lectures provide background for the topics addressed during the course and will also be used to review the set texts.

Assessment Methods

The assessment is based on three compulsory assignments. The first assignment will not receive a lettered grade, but must receive a passing grade; students who are given a ‘fail’ on this assignment will be given the opportunity to re-submit their work. The second assignment counts for 40%, and the third for 60% of the final course grade; it is not possible to re-submit these assignments. The last two assignments will be graded on a scale from A to F, where E is the lowest passing grade. All work must be submitted before deadlines that will be set at the beginning of the semester. Students must obtain a passing grade on all assignments in order to receive a final passing course grade.
