Learning outcome

After successfully completing the course, the candidate will have achieved the following learning outcomes defined in terms of knowledge, skills and general competence.

Knowledge

The candidate:

  • Has knowledge of the sources of law teaching and legal methods
  • Is familiar with the importance and function of contracts
  • Has knowledge of the most relevant areas of law that are important for accountants and bookkeeper’s work, including, rules on entering into agreements; interpretation and validity; key parts of the rules concerning the organization of economic activities and representation in relation to companies, trusts and securing monetary claims; debt collection law with emphasis on material bankruptcy law and central parts of the rules concerning financial crime.
  • Knowledge of the rules on purchase and default effects in the case of breach of contract; commercial businesses’ relationship to creditors and government; the loss of monetary claims in relation to settlements and statute of limitations, as well as bankruptcy processes and separate debt recovery law.

Skills

The candidate is able to carry out practical discussions and explain the content of the regulations concerning:

  • Entering into agreements; contract interpretation and validity
  • Establishing economic activities and representation in corporate matters
  • Establishing and securing monetary claims
  • Terms for filing bankruptcy and invalidation
  • Economic crime

The candidate can carry out practical discussions in relation to central rules concerning:

  • Purchase and default effects in the case of breach of contract
  • Commercial businesses’ relationship to creditors and government
  • Loss of monetary claims in relation to settlements and statute of limitations
  • Bankruptcy processes and separate debt recovery law.

General competence

The candidate can:

  • Acquire new knowledge in the above areas of law and knowledge of other areas of law that are important for accounting and auditing
  • Communicate central subject matter using the relevant forms of expression
  • Exchange views and experiences with other professionals and help to develop good practice
  • Contribute to innovation and innovation processes
  • Reflect on ethical issues in the relevant legal areas
  • View the course in a broader societal perspective

Course Description

The first semester covers:

  • Contract law
  • Sale of goods law
  • Monetary claims law
  • Regulations concerning creditors’ claims on spouses’ and cohabitants’ assets
  • Public administration law

The second semester covers:

  • Law of mortgages and protection accorded by law
  • Company law with emphasis on Limited Companies Act and Company Act
  • Separate debt recovery with emphasis on debt collection and enforcement
  • Public prosecution with emphasis on debt negotiation and bankruptcy
  • Economic crime

Teaching and Learning Methods

Lectures, assignments and groupwork. Students should make groups with respect to course activities.

Assessment Methods

Course requirements: submission of two obligatory assignments, which must receive passing marks before the student will be permitted to sit the examination.
Written examination (6 hours). The final examination of the course (at the end of the second semester) assesses the student’s knowledge of all the course units.
In ordered to qualify as a registered public accountant candidates must achieve a grade of C or better.
