Tourism Geography and GIS 6075

Learning outcome

After accomplished study the student should have the following knowledge, skills and general competency:

Knowledge:

  • have knowledge about the most important global tourism flows and the explanations behind these
  • have knowledge about important attractions of global, regional and national value
  • have knowledge about how GIS in various ways can be applied in tourism

Skills:

  • be able to compose different holiday packages to different market segments at national and international level
  • be able to link tourism interests to different competitive preferences of destinations
  • be able to apply elements of the GIS-tool to planning of tourism

General competency:

  • have raised the geographic understanding for tourist flows globaly and nationally
  • have strengthened the general competency of the students about attractions of global, regional and national value
  • have strengthened the students' understanding of GIS as a planning tool in tourism.

Course Description

Relevant topics will be:

  • Travel resources and travel demand
  • The importance of climate
  • The transport offering
  • The globalisation of tourism
  • Regional aspects of tourism in Europe
  • Africa and Middle-East
  • Asia and Oceania
  • America
  • Future aspects
  • Use of GIS in tourism

Teaching and Learning Methods

Classes of 3-4 hours a week in spring semester. The classes will vary between traditional lectures, seminars, project work, training tasks, student presentations and written reports/hand-ins. Parts of the classes will be compulsory.

Assessment Methods

Written group task with presentation within GIS, which counts for 30 % of the final mark. Written individual final examination, 4 hours (70 %). The part exam in GIS must qualify for "passed" to allow the student to take the final examination. Graded marks (A-F).

Minor adjustments may occur during the academic year, subject to the decision of the Dean
