Learning outcome

After successfully completing the course, the candidate will have achieved the following learning outcomes defined in terms of knowledge, skills and general competence.

Knowledge

The candidate:

  • Is familiar with planning, evaluating and supervising educational music activities
  • Is familiar with the subject matter and methods of developing educational music activities
  • Is familiar with a repertoire of listening material that can form the basis of methodological listening activities
  • Has knowledge of children and young people’s music culture
  • Has knowledge of adapted teaching in music

Skills

The candidate:

  • Masters ensemble playing using classroom instruments
  • Masters a repertoire of songs/tunes using band instruments (bass, keyboards, guitar, percussion)
  • Masters percussion instruments
  • Is familiar with the relationship between physical motor movement activities and rhythmic-melodic movement in music

General competence

The candidate:

  • Can facilitate and guide practical musical activities
  • Can facilitate and lead methodical listening activities
  • Is familiar with key educational topics in music
  • Is familiar with subject-specific methods in educational musical activities
  • Has basic knowledge of and experience with composition/notation using ICT/MIDI technology

Course Description

Emphasis will be placed on :

  • Leadership and facilitation of practical music activities
  • Music-pedagogical reflection
  • Playing classroom instruments, including band and percussion instruments

Teaching and Learning Methods

The teaching and learning methods that are used in the course are an integral part of the studies. By participating in class, students will gain practical skills in teaching and learning methods that they can use in their own teaching. Teaching methods that promote students’ and pupils’ ability to take responsibility for their own learning will be emphasized.

Assessment Methods

Coursework

  • Test in ensemble playing using band instruments
  • Test using percussion instruments

Prerequisites for the exam:

  1. Mandatory assignments approved by the instructor
  2. Participation in the teaching (minimum of 80 %)

Final examination

The final examination consists of a written and a practical / oral part. The written part (5 hours) includes topics from the curriculum in music pedagogy / didactics. The practical / oral part consists of a practical / methodical examination.

Each candidate will be given 20 minutes.

The practical / oral part is weighted 60 %. The written part assessed at 40 %.

Music didactics project

15 ECTS

Students taking the 60 ECTS teacher’s training study programme will normally complete 15 credits didactics courses in two subjects. The students who only have music as an approved teaching course will therefore take 30 ECTS in music didactics. These students will, in addition to the regular course, select 1000 pages reading syllabus and complete an individual in-depth study of in didactics, approx. 15 pages (Times New Roman and 1.5 line spacing; cover, preface, table of contents, bibliography and appendices are additional). In connection with the writing project, each student can expect up to 4 hours of supervision.

A partial grade for the assignment will be given. The final grade will be given on the basis of this and the examination in music didactics; the two are equally weighted.
