Learning outcome
After successfully completing the course, the candidate will have achieved the following learning outcomes defined in terms of knowledge, skills and general competence.
Knowledge
The candidate has knowledge of:
- How illness, examinations and surgical treatment affect acutely ill patients’ basic needs, resources and ability to cope
- How the organizational and functional framework and health policy priorities of the student’s practical training institution affect health nursing services
- Medication calculation and can update their knowledge in this area.
Skills
The candidate can:
- Observe and evaluate acutely ill patients’ health, capacity for self-care, ability to meet their basic needs, and coping skills
- Assess patient needs and define goals for nursing, planning, prioritizing, implementation, documentation and evaluation in the nursing of acutely ill patients
- Perform pre- and postoperative nursing
- Prevent postoperative complications and worsening of illness, and consider further measures to ensure this
- Inform, guide and instruct acutely ill patients and their families
- Master basic and specific nursing skills, and use common medical equipment with accuracy, attention and dexterity
- Administer medications accurately and responsibly, and report on the efficacy and side effects of drugs
- Use documentation systems in the practical training institutions
- Work using evidence-based practice
- Use appropriate communication skills with patients, families and health personnel
- Integrate knowledge from the natural sciences, social sciences and nursing sciences
- Master skills in medication management.
General competence
The candidate can:
- Follow professional ethical guidelines, applicable laws and regulations
- Argue for appropriate choices in ethical dilemmas
- Participate in professional and interdisciplinary collaboration within and outside the specialist health services
- Carry out a nurse’s administrative tasks for a small group of patients
- Plan, assess and communicate their learning processes and outcomes

- Reflect on their own behaviour and professional practice in their interactions with patients and their families.
Course Description
Clinical nursing in a surgical ward including observational studies of anesthesia, intensive care and surgery, which is designed to focus on the integration of knowledge, skills and attitudes related to:

- The nurse
- Interaction
- Context

Medication calculations
Teaching and Learning Methods
Eight weeks of clinical studies: demonstration, practice, guidance, and reflection.
Assessment Methods
Clinical nursing in specialist health services (surgical wards) - graded on a pass/fail basis.
Written individual examination (under supervision) in medication calculation - two hours. To pass, candidates must answer all questions correctly; any score below 100% will be given a fail. This exam must be completed before the second period of practical training, in course 10 or 11.
The student must have passed the preceding course in clinical studies in order to take the course that follows.
