2303 English 1: Year Level 1-7

Introduction

English 1: Year Level 1-7 consists of two courses of 15 ECTS, ENG 101 and ENG 102. The study programme will provide students with teaching competence in English in primary schools, from years 1- 7.

The study programme provides students with an introduction to language teaching and didactics with a special emphasis on English at beginner level. This includes knowledge of how language is structured and the use of various texts at the primary level. Developing students’ own language proficiency and textual competence is central. The study programme covers English teaching for various levels within primary schools; it examines what characterises pupils in this age group and their early foreign language development in English. In addition, the study programme is focused on varied activities and methods of teaching English in primary schools.

Target Group and Admission Requirements

Primary and lower secondary school teachers who wish to continue their education.

Aim of the Programme

Students will acquire the knowledge, skills and general competence needed to teach English in primary schools.

English 1 comprises 30 ECTS credits, divided into two courses each of 15 ECTS credits: ENG 101 and 102.

ENG 101 is taught in the autumn semester, and ENG 102 in the spring semester.

English 1 consists of five themes:

Being an English teacher

  • Children’s language learning from a second language perspective: language learning theories, strategies and methods
  • Curriculum and textbook analysis
  • The teacher as a language model in the classroom
  • The teacher’s own textual competence focusing on skills in written language

The English language: structure and system 1

  • Basic grammar with an emphasis on the differences and similarities between English and Norwegian
  • Words and learning vocabulary

Basic skills in English

  • Working with basic skills in the classroom with a focus on reading and oral skills
  • The use of ICT in connection with reading and oral skills

Texts and culture

  • Intercultural learning through texts
  • Texts for children and young people from English-speaking countries
  • Basic knowledge of genres
  • Basic skills with a focus on reading, mathematics and digital skills

The English language: structure and system 2

  • English as a world language
  • Basic pronunciation and intonation
  • Cultural conventions of language use

Internationalization

In the spring semester, the college arranges a one-week study trip to the Norwegian Study Centre in York, UK.

Teaching and Learning Methods

The study programme includes varied and active teaching and learning methods including lectures in combination with discussion of material, seminars, group work and individual study.

Theory and Practical Training

A period of teaching practice is compulsory for all students taking General Teacher Education, Year Levels 1-7.

The assessment methods are given in the course descriptions.

Suitability

Students on the General Teacher Education study programme will be continually assessed regarding their suitability according to national regulations for suitability assessment.
