2407 English 1: Year Level 5-10

Introduction

The study programme will provide students with teaching competence in English in lower secondary schools, from years 5-10.

English 1: Year Level 5-10, provides an introduction to language teaching and subject didactics, and uses a rich and varied range of texts both for the student’s personal and professional growth and for use in teaching in the lower secondary school. The study programme includes knowledge of the English language’s grammatical and phonological structure and focuses on the development of the student’s language proficiency, textual skills and vocabulary. The language’s cultural foundation is also emphasised. Emphasis is also given to what characterises pupils in this age group, and their language development. Various teaching and learning methods will also be central.

Teacher education students and teachers who wish to continue their education.

Aim of the Programme

Students will acquire the knowledge, skills and general competence needed to teach English in lower secondary schools.

English 1 comprises 30 ECTS credits, divided into two courses each of 15 ECTS credits: ENG 501 and 502.

ENG 501 is taught in the autumn semester, and ENG 502 in the spring semester.

English 1 consists of five themes:

Being an English teacher

  • Children’s language learning from a second language perspective: language learning theories, strategies and methods
  • Curriculum and textbook analysis
  • The teacher as a language model in the classroom
  • The teacher’s own textual competence focusing on skills in written language

The English language: structure and system 1

  • Basic grammar with an emphasis on the differences and similarities between English and Norwegian
  • Words and learning vocabulary

Basic skills in English

  • Working with basic skills in the classroom with a focus on reading and oral skills
  • The use of ICT in connection with reading and oral skills

Texts and culture

  • Intercultural learning through texts
  • Texts for children and young people from English-speaking countries
  • Basic knowledge of genres
  • Basic skills with a focus on reading, mathematics and digital skills

The English language: structure and system 2

  • English as a world language
  • Basic pronunciation and intonation
  • Cultural conventions of language use

Internationalization

The study programme allows for the possibility of studying abroad.

In the spring semester, the college arranges a one-week study trip to the Norwegian Study Centre in York, UK.

Teaching and Learning Methods

The study programme includes varied and active teaching and learning methods including lectures in combination with discussion of material, seminars, group work and individual study.

Theory and Practical Training

A period of teaching practice is compulsory for all students taking General Teacher Education, Year Levels 5-10.

The assessment methods are given in the course descriptions.

Suitability

Students enrolled on the General Teacher Education study programme will be continually assessed regarding their suitability according to national regulations for suitability assessment.
