2408 English 2: Year Level 5-10

Introduction

English 2: Year Level 5-10 consists of two courses of 15 ECTS, ENG 503 and ENG 504.

English 2 builds on English 1 and provides specialization in language teaching and subject didactics, and uses a rich and varied range of texts for the student’s personal and professional growth and for use in teaching in the primary and lower secondary school. The study programme includes further knowledge of the English language’s grammatical and phonological structure and focuses on the development of the student’s language proficiency, textual skills and vocabulary. Further knowledge of the language’s cultural foundation is also emphasised. Critical assessment of various aspects of English teaching in year levels 5-10, particularly with regard to issues relating to the transition between the year levels will be emphasised. In addition, the study programme provides further insight into stimulating teaching and learning methods and activities that promote learning. English is also viewed from a historical perspective with more complex texts in different genres.

Teacher education students and teachers who wish to continue their education.

Aim of the Programme

The study programme will prepare students, academically and didactically, to teach English at the upper primary and lower secondary levels. English 2 builds on English 1 and allows for a greater degree of specialization in language teaching and didactics.

English 2 comprises 30 ECTS credits, divided into two courses each of 15 ECTS credits: ENG 503 and 504.

English 2 consists of four themes:

The English language: structure and system 3

  • Language in context: text-based grammar for teachers
  • Standard language and geographical / social varieties
  • Cultural conventions and language usage
  • The English teacher’s language skills and textual competence

Basic skills with a focus on oral and written skills

  • Writing as a process
  • Writing in classroom
  • Integration of oral and written language in learning activities
  • Assessment focused on oral and written skills
  • The English teacher’s language skills and textual competence

Text, society and culture

  • Society, history, and cultural expressions in English speaking countries
  • Critical and analytical approaches to literary and other texts
  • Selection and organization of work with texts in the classroom
  • The interplay of reading and writing

Integrated basic skills

  • LK06 as a framework for the development of questions within the subject area
  • The development of the pupils’ skills: working with various strategies and methods, different ways of organizing the teaching, assessment and assessment tools, the use of strategies and adapted teaching.

Internationalization

The study programme allows for the possibility of studying abroad.

Teaching and Learning Methods

The study programme includes varied and active teaching and learning methods including lectures in combination with discussion of material, seminars, group work and individual study.

Theory and Practical Training

A period of teaching practice is compulsory for all students taking General Teacher Education, Year Levels 5-10.

Suitability

Students enrolled on the General Teacher Education study programme will be continually assessed regarding their suitability according to national regulations for suitability assessment.
