2305 Social Studies 1, Year Level 1-7

Introduction

Social Studies 1, Year Level 1-7 consists of two courses of 15 ECTS credits SAM 101 and SAM 102.

SAM 101 focuses on Norwegian society, and provides students with the competence to teach basic topics in history, geography and civics. The course covers primary teaching in Norwegian history from Viking times, the close and familiar world, home and community as a didactic point of departure.

SAM 102 builds on the course SAM 101 and focuses on the world outside Norway in relation to knowledge of Norwegian society. The course includes academic disciplines within history, geography and civics, and focuses especially on knowledge of European history to the 1800s, knowledge of maps and how to use them, migration, multiculturalism, indigenous peoples and national minorities.

Target Group and Admission Requirements

Primary and secondary school student-teachers and teachers who wish to continue their education.

Aim of the Programme

Students will acquire knowledge, skills and general competence that will equip them for teaching social studies in the primary and lower secondary school.

Social Studies 101 and 102 provide a total of 30 ECTS credits over two semesters with modules of 15 ECTS credits each.

Internationalization

Internationalization agreements are applicable in the 3rd year of study.

Teaching and Learning Methods

The study programme uses varied and active teaching and learning methods such as class discussions, lectures, seminars, working with sources, writing assignments and participation in field trips and/or field work. Excursion (s) / field work will be arranged in connection with the work concerning using one’s own community as a learning arena.

Assessment Methods

SAM 101:

Students must participate in excursions or fieldwork. Participation is registered as pass / fail.

Students must write an excursion report. Assessed as pass / fail.

Students will participate in group work with oral presentation to the class, which will be assessed as pass / fail.

Final assessment

Formal essay, which counts for 1/3 of the final grade.

Individual written exam of five hours, which counts for 2/3 of the final grade.

SAM 102:

Students will work in groups with assignments / questions that will be presented orally to the class. Graded as pass / fail.

Final assignment:

Written didactics assignment in groups, which counts for 1/4 of the final grade.

Individual oral examination, which counts for 3/4 of the final grade.
