Learning outcome

After having accomlished the course the student should have the following knowledge, skills and general compency:

Knowledge

  • have knowledge about the qualities of different tourist destinations and the development of some of the destination characteristics until this day
  • have knowledge about management problems in destination development
  • have thorough insight into city tourism as well as rural tourism

Skills:

  • be able to partcipate constructively in planning and development of destinations
  • be able to contribute to profiling destinations
  • be able to contribute to strenghtening the experience dimension of destinations

General competency:

  • understand the consequences of destination development for local communities
  • understand the interaction between public and private actors

Course Description

Relevant topics may be:

  • Place, place understanding and place development
  • PLP (project leader process)
  • Destination leadership
  • Experiences
  • Image/branding
  • Short breaks/large city tourism
  • Natural heritage tourism
  • Cultural heritage tourism, niche tourism and sports tourism
  • Factors of success
  • Internet and marketing of destinations
  • Entrepreneurship and planning

Teaching and Learning Methods

3 hours of lectures per week in the autumn semester. The lectures will vary between traditional lectures, seminars, project work, exercise tasks, student presentations and written reports/hand-ins.

Assessment Methods

  • 4 case submissions (to be defended orally), 3 cases in groups, 1 case on an individual basis, every group case worth 20% of the grade, individual case worth 40% of the grade, graded marks (A-F)

Minor adjustments may occur during the academic year, subject to the decision of the Dean
