Learning outcome
After successfully completing the course, the candidate will have achieved the following learning outcomes:
Knowledge
The candidate has knowledge of:
- The socio-historical context that forms the background for various types of artistic expression
- The key concepts and exhibition techniques used in the dissemination of art and design culture
- Children and youth’s cultural reality
- The locations for the dissemination of art and design
Skills
The candidate can / has:
- Present art, design and crafts to pupils in primary and secondary schools
- Use relevant terminology and methods of analysis to describe, interpret and discuss art and design from different stylistic periods, and relate this to his/her own experiences and reflections
- Describe images and objects when teaching various age groups
- Understand art and design culture in relation to the professional aspect of the studies
- Understand art and design culture in relation to the current curriculum
General competence
The candidate can:
- Use visual and material cultural expressions as a starting point for the development of their own ideas, exhibition work and creative work with pupils in school
- Apply knowledge related to art and design culture in a subject-didactics context through practical teaching work
- Understand the relation between art and design and other disciplines / subjects in school, and use the subject in theme and project work
Course Description
The students will practice teaching the subject at different levels in schools. They will learn how to use exhibitions and various forms of digital media in visual presentations. The focus on the teaching of the subject will be based on figurative art, architecture, handicrafts traditions, industrial design, modern design and industrial mass production.

Compulsory attendance
Compulsory attendance is required for parts of the course, which is indicated in the semester plan; guidelines for compulsory attendance in studies at the Faculty of Art, Folk Culture and Teacher Education apply. Compulsory attendance is regulated by Telemark University College’s Examination Regulations and the Norwegian Universities Act § 40 and § 46.3.
The subject matter of art and design culture will be utilised in the context of schools or other teaching arenas. The student may relate this work to his/her teaching practice placement, possibly in the form of a group project. The course also includes museum visits, where the topic will be dissemination.
Assessment Methods
Examination:
Written 6-hour examination which will be submitted on Fronter and counts for 100% of the course grade. A grade will be entered on the student’s diploma, from A to F, where A represents the highest grade, and E the lowest passing grade.
