521 English Studies, 1 year programme
Target Group and Admission Requirements
Applicants must meet general admission requirements. The target group includes all applicants who are interested in acquiring a solid basic competence in English, for use in teaching or other areas that require a good understanding of the language. Students should have knowledge of English that is equivalent to English studied as a special subject at upper secondary school ("videregående"), with a grade of 4 as a recommended minimum.
Aim of the Programme
The study programme provides a broad introduction to British and American literature and culture, an understanding of how the language is used in other parts of the English-speaking world, and insight into English grammar, phonetics and the spoken language. The use of the subject in teaching and communication is also stressed. The one-year study programme provides teaching competence in English sufficient for teaching in lower and upper secondary schools.
Curriculum and structure
|
The study programme consists of seven courses, five worth 10 ECTS credits and two worth 5 ECTS credtis. Four of these courses will be taken during the autumn semester, and three during the spring semester.
Teaching and Learning Methods
The teaching and learning methods include lectures, seminars, written and oral project work and submissions. Part of the teaching is compulsory. Please see the individual course plans for details.
Telemark University College collaborates with other universities and university colleges about the Norwegian Study Centre in York, and the students will have an obligatory two-week stay at the Centre. This forms a part of the practical language training and of the study of British literature and society. Students who are prevented from going to York can apply for an exemption, and will instead be given a two-week written project. The project needs to be given a pass for the student to obtain a pass mark in the course 2007 British Literature and Culture. On certain conditions, the State Educational Loan Fund may offer an additional loan to cover part of the expenses of the stay. Total fixed expenses (travel, board and lodging, course fees) will probably be around NOK 6,000.
Assessment Methods
All of the courses will have both continuous and final assessment. At the beginning of the study programme, students will be provided with details concerning the written and oral assessments.
Minor adjustments may occur during the academic year, subject to the decision of the Dean
