Engineering Mechanics MA1106
Course Objectives
The aim of the course is to give the students basic knowledge of the theory and application of the mechanics of materials.
Understanding of behaviour of materials under load as a basis for static’s and construction subjects at a later stage in their studies.
Course Description
Forces, Force Systems, Moment of a Force, Equivalent Systems, Equilibrium of a Rigid Body, Structural Analysis, Shear and Moment Equations and Diagrams, Beams, Trusses, Frames, Girders, Ropes. Friction and Frictional Forces. Centre of Area, Centre of Gravity and Moment of Inertia.
Mechanical properties of materials, Stress and Strain, Hook's Law, Distribution of Stress. Axial Load, Thermal Stress, Torsion, Bending, Transverse Shear, Combined Loadings. Plane-Stress, Mohr's Circle. Deflection of Beams and Shafts, Design of Beams and Shafts.
Learning Methods
Lectures and tutorials
Assessment Methods
The final course grade is calculated thus:
Final assessment (final examination) 70 %
Continuous assessment (exercises) 30 %
At least 80% of the exercises must be completed and approved in order to sit the final examination.
