Mathematics Y2 FY2007
Course Objectives
The course will provide students with the mathematical skills that are necessary in the course subjects. It will provide students with a foundation that will enable them to progress with the course Mathematics I.
Course Description
Integration: Indefinite and definite integrals, substitution, partial integration, partial fraction expansion, area calculations, volume of a revolution (disk-washer method).
Functions II: Monotony and extremal points, curves and inflections, partial function rules, inverse functions, symmetrical functions.
Trigonometry II: Absolute angles, graphical representation of trigonometric functions, derivation, trigonometrical equations of the first and second degree, trigonometrical equations of the type a×sinx + b×cosx = c, derivation, integration and analysis and trigonometrical functions.
Exponential and logarithmic functions. Exponential function, logarithmic term, logarithmic function log x, calculations for logarithms, Briggian logarithms, natural logarithms, derivation, logarithmic and exponential 1st and 2nd degree equations, derivation, integration and analysis of logarithms – and exponential functions.
Vector calculations: Vectors in plane and space, vector coordinates, scale products, vector products, scaled trivector products, distances in space.
Numerical sequences and series: Numerical sequences, arithmetical series, convergence and infinite series.
Learning Methods
5 hours of lectures and 5 hours exercises per week.
Assessment Methods
Two written mid-term tests which count for 50% and a written final examination (4 hours) which counts 50%. Both mid-term tests or the final examination must receive passing marks in order to receive a passing mark for the course.
Minor adjustments may occur during the academic year, subject to the decision of the Dean
