Mathematics 5500

Course Objectives

The course will prepare students for later parts of their studies, for which an understanding of mathematical analysis and methods will be essential.

Course Description

The course provides students with a foundation in mathematical analysis and probability calculation. The course will first focus on basic mathematical concepts and calculations, such as the functions of one variable: Derivation, integration and optimisation. The course will also consider exponential and logarithmic functions and financial mathematics. In functions with several variables, partial derivation and extremal problems are examined. In probability calculations there will be a focus on discrete probability models, combinatorics, conditional probability and independence.

Learning Methods

6-8 hours of lectures per week in the autumn semester.

Assessment Methods

Mid-term assessment in the form of obligatory assignments which must be approved before students will be permitted to sit the individual written 5-hour final examination.

Minor adjustments may occur during the academic year, subject to the decision of the Dean
