Course Objectives

The course focuses on the following elements:
 Knowledge and experience with fieldwork and the planning of field work
 Knowledge of the earth’s climate zones and climatic vegetation zones
 The earth’s flora and important culture plants in the world’s agriculture
 Marine bio-geography
 In-depth study of a bio-geographical region outside the Nordic region
 Knowledge concerning the development of plant and animal geographic regions
 Knowledge of general animal-geography
 Knowledge and experience which may stimulate further in-depth study and development

Course Description

The main part of the course is built up around plant and animal geographical regions. The students will gain an overview of the geographical localisation and distribution of the main types of ecosystems on the earth. They will gain knowledge of the most important concepts and methods in eco-system-mapping. Emphasis will be placed on the factors that influence the development of various ecosystems. Biological factors must be evaluated in relation to economic and cultural factors. The course includes an obligatory field course of at least 40 hours. The field course should be located in a region chosen for in-depth study. Management of threatened species and a sustainable development of ecosystems is included in the course. The students will also work with the planning and arrangement of the teaching in bio-geography. Study of the Nordic ecosystem is also included in the main part of the course

Written 5-hour examination
