Cultural Analysis II 3310
Course Objectives
The course builds on Culture Analysis I. The aim of the course is to develop the student’s ability to view the contemporary world critically and to identify the distinguishing characteristics of modernity. The student will learn to understand the processes which create change in society. Abstract analytical concepts dealing with change-mechanisms, power and cultural values will also be discussed. Using these tools, the student will gain insight into the relationship between cultural diversity and cultural homogeneity.
Course Description
Norwegian society and the characteristics of Norwegian culture are the integrating themes of the course. These will be analysed as one of the many forms of social organisation, adaptation and self-understanding.

- Introduction to the concepts of modernity, tradition, post-modernity and globalisation
- The concept of nation
- Social and cultural change
- Sub-cultures
Learning Methods
Lectures, group work, presentation of written work.
Assessment Methods
Written, individual mid-term examination that counts for 40% as well as an individual written examination that counts for 60%. Grades A-F. Both examinations must receive passing grades in order to achieve a final passing grade.
Minor adjustments may occur during the academic year, subject to the decision of the Dean
