Course Objectives
The course will provide students with an introduction to the principal philosophical works and authorship in Western thought from Antiquity up until the present day. The principal philosophical ideas will be studied and discussed in the light of the argumentation in the various texts and contemporary philosophical ideas. The course will provide an in-depth understanding of major philosophical ideas.
Course Description
Philosophical works and authorship will be discussed chronologically. The main emphasis will be on works which focus on basic philosophical ideas, mainly epistemology, metaphysics and ethics. More specifically, emphasis will be placed on texts that focus on inner argumentation and contemporary philosophical ideas.
Learning Methods
The course instruction will consist of 3 hours per week distributed between lectures and seminars. Students will be required to write individual term papers with mandatory supervision. The supervisor must approve the topic of the term paper. It may also be possible for students to use material that they have been working on in the seminars. Required reading for the course comprises 800 pages.
Assessment Methods
Students will be required to submit a term paper, which will represent 40% of the final grade. Students will also be required to take a 3-hour final written examination, which will represent 60% of the final grade. Before students are permitted to sit for the final examination they must first submit their term paper before the deadline. Students must achieve passing grades in both the term paper and the final examination in order to earn a passing grade for the course.
