Course Objectives
The students will gain basic knowledge and understanding of Norwegian culture and cultural processes considered in a historical perspective. They will learn to discuss cultural themes in the context of contemporary society.
Course Description
The course provides an introduction to Norwegian cultural history from 1850 to 1950, and includes the following topics:
- An introduction to material and non-material cultural heritage
- The main characteristics of economic and social changes
- Principle characteristics of social interaction and cooperation in towns and villages
- Ideas and conceptions
- Subcultures in Norwegian society
- Nation-building processes
Learning Methods
Lectures, group work and study trips.
Assessment Methods
Obligatory home assignment which counts for 30 % of the final grade. 5-hour written final examination which counts for 70 % of the final grade. Graded marks. Both the home assignment and the final examination must achieve passing marks in order to receive a passing mark for the course.
