Material Science MA3206
Course Objectives
The course aims to provide a fundamental knowledge of materials technology and the property of materials, which will enable the appropriate choice of material. Construction materials technology provides knowledge concerning the important relationship between the structure and properties of various materials, and how, in practice, material properties may be managed and controlled through technological processes.
Course Description
The course covers the following subjects: Structure of construction materials. Plasticity and dislocation movement. Testing materials, destructive and non-destructive methods. Testing standards and material standards. State diagrams and alloy systems. Steel materials - heat treatment, hardening and weldability. Cast iron. Aluminium and copper alloys. Plastics, composites and ceramics.
Learning Methods
Lectures, demonstrations, laboratory practice and calculation exercises.
Assessment Methods
The course evaluation will be base on laboratory work and one practical assigment counting a total of 10%, course component examinations counting 30% and a final examination which will count 60%.
Students must have completed at least 80% of the exercises, and had their practical assignments and laboratory work approved in order to sit the final examination.
