Course Objectives

The course will provide an in-depth study of children, movement and physical education in various types of schools. Students will acquire the basic tools to critically reflect on the subject of physical education in schools, children and youth’s need for movement and physical activity, and how schools and society organise such activities. The course will also focus on analytical and critical reflection with regard to the role of physical education within the educational system. The student will formulate, investigate and develop understanding of the theories on children’s predisposition and need for movement, and learn to analyse and view didactic approaches and physical learning-environments critically.

Course Description

The course will emphasise:

 Physical education in the school system
 Scientific and didactic approaches of the school
 The movement-patterns and contextual learning of children
 The physical learning environment in schools
 Physical activity in the school-day
 Physical activity and health among children and youth
 Physical condition among children and youth
 Gender aspects of the subject, physical education
 Physical education outdoors

Learning Methods

Fifteen lectures, each of 4 hours duration, during the spring semester. Obligatory literature seminar.
Lectures, seminars and study/field trips.

Assessment Methods

Students shall carry out an examination lecture of approximately 30 minutes duration on an assigned topic and submitted manuscript. Graded mark.

Minor adjustments may occur during the academic year, subject to the decision of the Dean
