Course Objectives

The course will provide students with the tools and knowledge that will enable them to problematise and examine outdoor life considered as a socio-cultural phenomenon; especially, in relation to the actions, and the movement and body culture, regarded in the context of human use and relation to nature. In addition, they will develop the ability to use the appropriate theory with the purpose of reaching a deeper understanding of the phenomenon. It is also a main aim of the course that students develop the ability to relate practice to theory.

Course Description

The course will focus especially on:

  • Human use of nature – a single phenomenon or several different phenomena?
  • Development of outdoor life, change and stability – modern trends and traditions
  • Participation and change: Intended or unintended consequences of social processes
  • Construction of meaning: Identity, gender and culture
  • Understanding nature: Cultural systems of meaning and understanding and individual understanding
  • Experiencing nature: Experience, interpretation and understanding
  • Outdoor life’s pedagogical opportunities and challenges

Learning Methods

Fifteen sessions of lectures (3-4 hours) during the spring semester.

Lectures, seminars and study/field trips.

Assessment Methods

Students shall carry out an examination lecture of approximately 30 minutes duration on an assigned topic and submitted manuscript. The manuscript must demonstrate the student’s ability to work independently, and be produced by the student. Graded mark. 75% obligatory attendance required.

Minor adjustments may occur during the academic year, subject to the decision of the Dean
