Course Objectives

The course will provide students with an introduction to the fundamental methods of biotechnology. The emphasis will be on problem-solving based on these methods, and the reporting of results.

Course Description

Topics:
Extraction of DNA from blood and hair
PCR set up and optimalization
RFLP
Sequencing and fragment analysis
Microsatellites

AD-assay

Learning Methods

80 hours of laboratory exercises and lessons in laboratory techniques.

Assessment Methods

One final grade will be given for two part-exams: the laboratory reports will be given a cumulative grade which counts for 50% of the final grade, and a 3-hour written final examination will count for the other 50% of the final grade. The laboratory reports must have been submitted prior to taking the final examination, and all must have received passing grades. The grades will be given as a final grade by the course instructor.

Minor adjustments may occur during the academic year, subject to the decision of the Dean
