Mathematics for Ecologists 4100

Course Objectives

Upon completing the course, students will be able to use mathematics as a tool for solving various problems within environmental and health studies. Students will also become aware of the potential of mathematics in solving other relevant problems.

Course Description

The presentation of the material will, to a large degree, be explained with concrete examples from biology and economics. The course will build on basic mathematical principles.

Basic topics of the lectures will include:

  • Calculation using units of measurement
  • Basic probability calculation
  • Functions with a single variable and curve-plotting
  • Logarithmic and exponential functions
  • Derivation
  • Integration
  • Functions with two variables
  • Basic trigonometry
  • Simple differential equations
  • Percent growth-rate and geometric series

Learning Methods

72 lecture hours.

28-hours of calculation practice and repetition.

Assessment Methods

Grades will be given for two examinations: a 1-hour midterm examination which will count for 20%, and a 5-hour final examination which will count for 80% of the final grade. Both examinations must receive passing marks.

Minor adjustments may occur during the academic year, subject to the decision of the Dean
