Course Objectives

Practical Skills: The application of styles in word processing, construction of spreadsheet models and simple presentation techniques. Basic concepts in programming using macro language in spreadsheets and use of problem-solving methods.
Theoretical understanding of:

  • Historical background of today's technology
  • Impact of technology on society
  • Hardware and network
  • Legislation regarding electronic information
  • Ethical and legal dilemmas associated with the use of electronic information
  • Data security issues and methodology
  • Standards in relation to the construction and operation of computer systems and establishing data security

Course Description

Developing PC skills, digital representation of data, principles for design of computers and networks, internal and external networks, office support systems, hardware, operating systems, programming, ethics, data and information security, legislation, standards, IT in the workplace.

Learning Methods

Teacher-directed activities:

  • 6 hours of lectures / exercises / supervision per week during the autumn semester.

Student activities:

  • Optional weekly group assignments
  • Obligatory written specialisation assignments

The course puts a great emphasis on the use of the university college's e-learning system. Students will also have the option to take the course as a distance-learning course.

Assessment Methods

5-hour written examination. The required specialisation assignments mentioned above will be assessed on a pass/fail basis; in order to sit the examination the specialisation assignments must gain passing marks.

Minor adjustments may occur during the academic year, subject to the decision of the Dean
