Course Objectives

In the course Drawing and Colour students will:

• Acquire skills in composing images.
• Acquire skills in drawing the human body in detail.
• Learn to express themselves through images.
• Gain experience in observation, imitation and drawing from imagination.
• Acquire knowledge of colour, and gain experience in using this knowledge in working with images.
• Gain experience in using different materials and techniques.

Students will also:

• Learn how to model forms and volume in drawings.
• Learn how to create depth in drawings.
• Work with different surface treatment of drawings.
• Learn how to use digital imaging tools.

Student will be given training in:

• Discussing work processes and completed work.
• Writing professionally in a reflective manner about their own work.
• Presenting their work digitally.
• Evaluating their own and others’ work – on the basis of approved criteria.
• Placing their own work in cultural and current contexts.

Course Description

The course consists of an introduction to the subject, theoretical studies, practical exercises and assignments. The importance of images, their formal structure and visually communicative nature, characterizes the course.

The course includes the following components:

• Composition
• “Learn to draw” methods and techniques
• The digital camera as a tool for drawing and working with images
• Introduction to Photoshop
• Sketching, life drawing, portraits
• Sketching as a tool for ideas and idea development
• Observation, imitation, ideas and imagination
• Students’ analysis of their own drawings and the drawings of others
• Experimenting with the imagery of comics and street art techniques
• Colour theory
• Clamping and preparation of canvases and paper
• Testing various types and qualities of paint suitable for using in schools
• Still life

Learning Methods

Individual work with images and supervision constitute the main teaching and learning methods. Assessment will generally be done in groups, and will be an important part of the instruction. Most of the exercises and assignments will be exhibited and presented and evaluated orally. Several of the course assignments include a written component. To a great extent, the course requires that the students are physically present and participate, since the teaching is dialogic. Work involving the theory of colour will be carried out in groups.

The course includes image pedagogy, communicating with images, aesthetic learning processes and other relevant theory. Apart from this, all the teaching will involve interaction between theoretical work and practical experimentation and creative activity.

Assessment Methods

The course is comprised of many components; therefore, students will be given information concerning the course requirements at an early point in the studies. These requirements may include:

• A written report of a practical assignment
• Sketches and process documentation
• Finished works
• Examples from teacher-led exercises
• Written tests
