Course Objectives

Students will be able to:

  • Effectively throw pottery on a potter’s wheel.
  • Form everyday objects on a potter’s wheel.
  • Design utility objects.
  • Work with the decoration and ornamentation of everyday objects.
  • Acquire knowledge of glazing techniques and gain experience in experimenting with glazing.
  • Document the learning and design processes used in the portfolio assignments.
  • Acquire knowledge of the health issues in using clay and glazes and implement procedures for safety measures. Students should be familiar with data sheets and the content of materials used.
  • Use appropriate construction techniques.
  • Acquire knowledge of Norwegian and international ceramics.

Course Description

The course will emphasise practice and training in using a potter’s wheel using low and high fire clays as well as clay colours and glazes. The course will provide basic training in designing utility objects in clay made on a potter’s wheel.

The work will focus on creative work in clay where the student will acquire motor skills and technical and aesthetic knowledge in a continuous process from idea to finished product. The student will also acquire an understanding of the relationship between function, form, surface and colour, and aesthetic expression.

Learning Methods

Teaching will be carried out in the school’s pottery workshop, which will include an introduction, seminars, and tutorials. Students are expected to put in considerable effort in the workshop.

Assessment Methods

Students must submit a portfolio before the stipulated deadline, which will include products, presentations of products, process description and reflection on practical training. A grade will be given from A to F, where E is the lowest passing grade.

Minor adjustments may occur during the academic year, subject to the decision of the Dean
