Modeling and Simulation of Dynamic Systems FM1006
Course Objectives
Learn how to formulate dynamic models based on the mechanisms that drive the systems, with special emphasis on flow systems. Learn how simplifying assumptions enable efficient models. Learn methods for solving the equations that represent the mathematical models, i.e. to implement models and boundary conditions and run computer simulations. Learn basic techniques for model analysis.
Course Description
Formulation of dynamic models of flow systems based on material, momentum, and energy balances. Stoichiometric reactions and mass conservation. Overview of constitutive equations (reaction kinetics, thermodynamic models, transport laws). Modeling of coupled systems (co- and counter current flow, recirculation, etc.). Elementary systems theory: solution of linear models, stability.
Solving equations by use of computers. Accuracy and sources of error in numerical work. Numerical solution of sets of linear- and non-linear equations. Interpolation and extrapolation. Numerical differentiation and integration. Numerical solution of ordinary differential equations (ODEs) and systems of equations. Boundary-value problems for ordinary differential equations. Partial differential equations. Optimization and curve fitting. The use of computer tools for numerical computations (e.g. Matlab, Python, Modelica, etc.).
Learning Methods
The course is organized as two parallel topics, modeling and simulation, with lectures and exercises for each of these. Relevant software for PCs will be used extensively.
Assessment Methods
There will be exercises and/or assignments which are assessed as passed or failed, and where it will be necessary to pass on a certain number of such exercises/assignments in order to be allowed to take the final test.
The grade of the course is based on a final test which counts 100% in the course grade. For the final test, each exam paper is assessed separately for the topics modeling and simulation, and it is required to pass in both topics in order to get a passing grade. Those candidates that pass the final test will then receive a passing grade (A-E) for the final test; those that fail in one or both of the topics will receive grade F.
