Course Objectives

Knowlegde to the basic functions of a computer network. Configuration and administration of a computer network. Basic overview of industrial computer systems and be able to design computer based control systems for a small scale plant. Be able to evaluate and select an operating system and implement an information strategy for the plant.

Course Description

Introduction to SCADA systems and some of the modules in such a monitoring and control system. Computer network administration and configuration, network operating systems, communication protocols, services in the network, security, industrial communication, and fieldbus. The usage of OPC as a communication protocol. Real-time principles , real-time operating systems (RTOS), and combinations of RTOS and standard OS like Windows and Linux. Embedded systems.

Learning Methods

Lectures, labratory tasks, and assignments.

Assessment Methods

A group assignment counts for 40% of the final grade and a final test counts for 60% for the final grade. Both the group assignment and the final test must be passed to get a grade better than F.
