Combustion and Process Safety PEF2106
Course Objectives
The students get an introduction to combustion theory, combustion applications and models for consequence analysis in process safety. They shall be able to make calculations of such systems.
Course Description
The course consists of the following topics: Fundamental definitions and phenomena, thermodynamics, laminar premixed flames, burning jets, turbulent flames and combustion of droplets and solid fuels, formations of combustion-derived pollutants, sonic flow, shock waves, Riemann problem and detonations. Physical models used in process safety consequence studies are presented. CFD codes for dispersion and gas explosion simulations are introduced. Case histories from the process and the off-shore industry are used as examples. Accidental investigations techniques and human resistance are described. Hazard and operatibility studies (HA2OP) and process safety managment prinsiples are presented.
Learning Methods
Lectures and exercises.
Assessment Methods
Written mid semester examination counts 30% and written final examination counts 70% of the grade. No study aids permitted. 70% of exercises are mandatory
Minor adjustments may occur during the academic year, subject to the decision of the Dean
