Course Objectives

The students will acquire an overall insight into the most important framework conditions for the planning of housing development. The intention is to promote environmentally friendly and energy-efficient development in keeping with the laws and regulations. The students will also be able to select building methods and materials which represent good solutions with respect to the surroundings and indoor climate.

Course Description

The basic laws, regulations and guidelines. Introduction to the most common construction methods for houses of moderate dimensions. Proportioning in simple wood and brick structures in keeping with Norwegian Standards. Fire and sound. Heat-loss frameworks and energy conservation. Area calculations. Architecture and building codes. Indoor climate and health.

Learning Methods

The course consists of lectures and problem-solving practical assignments where ICT is used extensively. During the semester, the students will also complete projects based on surveying, mapping, designing and presenting a house.

Assessment Methods

The final evaluation is based on a mid-term course component examination counting 30%, a final examination counting 50% and a project which counts for 20% of the final grade. Individual evaluations are given for both the examinations and the project.
