Chemistry and the Environment FB3006

Course Objectives

To acquire a basic understanding of chemistry and the environment, and an appreciation of the causes and effects of those processes which result in environmental problems. The student will learn strategies to avoid or reduce environmental problems.

Course Description

Chemistry 7 credits: The structure of atoms and the periodic table, chemical binding, chemical equations and calculations, chemical names, solutions, chemical equilibrium, acids and bases, oxidation and reduction, electro-chemistry and organic chemistry.

Environment 3 credits: General ecology, air-pollution/purification of emissions to the atmosphere, water pollution/purification and discharges to water, refuse and its treatment, energy and the environment, working environments.

Learning Methods

Lectures and assignments.

Assessment Methods

Environment: 30 % written exam
Chemistry: 70 % final written exam.


In order to pass the course, the student must pass both examinations.

Minor adjustments may occur during the academic year, subject to the decision of the Dean
