Course Objectives

The students should be able to:

· explain the geodetic basis for the surveyor’s profession and describe various data

· suggest methods and choose equipment, detailed surveying and establish reference points

· carry out calculations using relevant ICT tools

· identify sources of error and evaluate the quality of collected data

· follow the requirements and norms for the profession and evaluate the competence of others in the field

Course Description

The course will provide a basic introduction to the land surveying profession. Topics of interest include the geodetic basis, survey instrument theory, altitudes, coordinate systems and coordinates, measuring in, laying out, maps and GPS.

Learning Methods

Lectures, instrument practice, and calculations and computer exercises.

The class will be divided into groups which will carry out six obligatory instrument exercises that must be approved.

Nine optional calculation and computer exercises will also be offered to the students which they can work on independently, either in groups or individually.
There will be arranged one mid term test and one final test.

ICT is used extensively and the students are expected to employ laptop computers during the course. The use of computers is also permitted in the final examination.

Assessment Methods

The two examinations will count towards the course grade. The final examination must receive a passing mark. The instrument exercises do not count towards the grade, but are obligatory.

Overview of assessment elements:

  • 3 obligatory instrument exercises all of which must be approved.
  • Course component examination, 3 hours, 40%.
  • 3 obligatory instrument exercises, all of which must be approved.
  • Final examination, 4 hours, 60%, must receive a passing mark.

Minor adjustments may occur during the academic year, subject to the decision of the Dean
