Course Objectives

Upon completion of the course students will be able to:

  • explain the geodetic basis for the surveyor’s profession and describe various datum
  • know how to use the classical instruments the level and the theodolite and carry out a survey and establish reference points.
  • Carry out manual calculations.
  • Identify sources of error and evaluate the quality of collected data.
  • Comply with the requirements and norms for the profession, and appreciate the skills of others in the field.

Course Description

The course will provide a basic introduction to the use of classical surveying instruments and manual calculations. Topical themes include the geodetic basis, instrument theory, and general surveying.

Learning Methods

Lectures, instrument exercises and calculation and computer exercises.

The class will be divided into groups which will perform three mandatory instrument exercises.

Assessment Methods

The grade on the final examination will count as the course grade. The instrument exercises are obligatory, and must be approved, but will not count towards the course grade.

Minor adjustments may occur during the academic year, subject to the decision of the Dean
