Separation and Thermal Engineering, and using HYSYS KJ4106

Course Objectives

To become familiar with the most common techniques which are used to separate liquids, gases and solids, and to be able to size and calculate these processequipments manually and by using HYSYS process-simulation program. Emphasis in using Hysys is for simulation of multicomponent destillation.

Course Description

Introduction to HYSYS

Separation techniques:
Basic theory
- Survey of mass transfer processes, diffusion

Liquid/solid separation
- Sedimentation, hydrocyclones, filtering, evaporation

Gas/solid separation
- Mechanical dust removal, gas scrubbing, filters, cyclones

Liquid/liquid separation
- Distillation, rectification, multi-component rectification, extraction

Gas/gas separation
- Absorption, adsorption

Other cleaning techniques
-Membrane separation

Thermal engineering:
Stationary heat transfer
- Conduction, convection, radiation, boiling, condensation

Heat-exchangers
- Sizing and use
- Medium for heat transport

Learning Methods

Lectures, assignments and the use of PC tools.

Assessment Methods

Continuous assessment (30 %).

Final written examination (70 %).

Hysys course have to be approved before final examination

In order to achieve a passing grade for the course a total assessment will be made of the student's continuous asssesment and final examination. This assessment must satisfy minimum requirements represented by the grade , and in addition the final written examination must have the grade E or higher.

Minor adjustments may occur during the academic year, subject to the decision of the Dean
