Course Objectives

The student should:

· Become familiar with the main laws, regulations and directives associated with this field.

· Be able to dimension and plan, help build and operate the water and drainage network and associated equipment.

· Be able to explain the characteristics and qualities of various types of water sources and recipients, including potential pollution problems.

· Become acquainted with and be able to apply the potable water law and be able to describe the quality requirements for purified and recycled water.

· Be able to explain the main principles for water and wastewater cleaning.

· Be able to calculate critical values and parameters for cleaning facilities.

· Be able to explain the different materials which are used in pipelines and equipment in the water and drainage network.

· Be familiar with the quantities of waste in the municipality sector, the amount of special waste and the waste-treatment concerns of the building, construction and property sector.

· be able to explain the principles for waste treatment according to applicable laws and regulations.

Course Description

The water-supply: consumption, quality, transportation of the water-supply, dimensioning, material choice/execution and treatment of the water supply according to rules and regulations. Sewage/waste water: its quantity and composition, the construction and design of the wastewater system, dimensioning, material choice and execution. Cleaning: the choice of process; mechanical, biological and chemical cleaning and sludge treatment.

Waste management: Quantity of waste, handling methods, associated pollution problems and the requirements of the authorities.

Learning Methods

The course is taught through lectures and assignment solving, both individually and as member of a group. There will be field trips to a municipal cleaning plant for water and sewage

Assessment Methods

The course grade will be assigned on the basis of a mid-term course component examination which counts for 40% and a final examination which counts for 60 %. Both examinations will be individual and written.

Minor adjustments may occur during the academic year, subject to the decision of the Dean
