Road Planning BY5106
Course Objectives
The students should:
· be able to integrate information from the courses BY5206 Roads and Water and Drainage to work out a building plan for a road parcel using modern computer aids.
· be able to explain simple geotechnical approaches, investigate geotechnical conditions along the parcel, interpret the given geotechnical information and suggest solutions and potential problems.
· be able to find other relevant information which will influence the project, such as information on cables, pipes, historical relics and the environment
· be able to integrate information that influences the project, and in response, suggest geometric shaping of the road and adaptations to the topography
· be able to carry out line calculations and dimension the road
· be able to identify sources of error and evaluate the quality of the collected data
· meet the requirements and norms for, and be able to evaluate the competence of others in the profession
Course Description
The course will provide basic skills in road planning according to the Road Standards based on Regulations according to the Road Law § 13 for Works and Roads. The students will be given an introduction to the use of the programme package Novapoint Road Professional, which they will use to plan a road parcel, write a project report and create a folder of technical drawings.
Learning Methods
The class will be divided into groups which will plan projects according to Telemark University College’s project model and in cooperation with the Norwegian Public Roads Administration. The results will be presented to the rest of the class. ICT is used extensively, and the students are expected to use their laptop computers.
Assessment Methods
An individual grade will be given, based on the following list:
1. The project process (20 %, individual grade)
- Participation, contribution to progress in the process, initiative, meeting leadership, secretarial functions, contact with supervisors and external contacts.
2. Project report (40 %, group grade)
- Goal fulfilment, professional level and breadth, theoretical foundation, report-organisation, language/readability/appearance/drawing quality.
3. Oral presentation of the project (20%, individual grade)
- Structure, length, speaking ability, aids, technical jargon, ability to communicate.
4. Examination when presenting the project (20% individual mark)
- Professional level and breadth, command of the subject and participation in the project.
Minor adjustments may occur during the academic year, subject to the decision of the Dean
