Folk Poetry and Folk Culture 2107

Course Objectives

Students will acquire insight into the principal genres of traditional Norwegian folk texts such as folk tales, legends and ballads/songs. The course provides an introduction to Norwegian folk culture in the nineteenth century and will discuss the collectors of folklore such as Faye, Landstad, Asbjørnsen and Moe.

Course Description

Norwegian folk texts and culture in the nineteenth century.

Learning Methods

Spring semester, 2 hours of lectures per week (15 weeks).
The course is a part of BA Literature and Language, specialisation in Norwegian.

Assessment Methods

Individual home assignment (roughly 4000 words) which counts for 40 %, and a 5-hour final examination which counts for 60 %. Students must receive passing marks in both the home assignment and the final examination in order to gain a passing mark for the course.

Minor adjustments may occur during the academic year, subject to the decision of the Dean
