Course Objectives
Students will gain basic knowledge and insight into Norwegian and European pictorial art and architecture from 1750 to the present. They will acquire knowledge concerning the principal epochs and trends within the various art forms, and emphasis will be given to analysing the form and content of works of art considered in a cultural and social context.
Course Description
The course provides an introduction to European and Norwegian art and cultural history from 1750 to the present, and includes the following topics:
- The emergence of art as an institution
- Principal epochs and trends in pictorial art, handicrafts and architecture, including a brief consideration of folk art, music and literature
- The role of art and the artist in society
- Principal theories regarding the analysis of pictorial art
- Policies regarding Norwegian art and artists
Learning Methods
Lectures, group work and study trips. The course includes obligatory coursework requirements which will be assessed as passed/failed.
Assessment Methods
Obligatory home assignment which counts for 30 % of the final grade. 5-hour written final examination which counts for 70 % of the final grade. Graded marks. Both the home assignment and the final examination must achieve passing marks in order to receive a passing mark for the course.Obligatory coursework must also be assessed as passed in order to receive a passing mark for t he course.
Minor adjustments may occur during the academic year, subject to the decision of the Dean
