Course Objectives

The aim of the course is to provide an overview of the principal trends in contemporary literature. Students will gain an insight into modern literary theory and literary interpretation which will be of use both in reading and writing fiction.

Course Description

The course has two parts. The first part will focus on style and genre, from historical and theoretical points of view. After an introduction to style and idiom the first part will focus on genre knowledge and comprehension. The second part will provide an introduction to twentieth century literature in which the main trends in European writing will be emphasised. This will be followed by a closer look at Norwegian and Nordic contemporary literature, during which specific texts will be examined. The current literary debates will also be presented.

Learning Methods

Instruction in the theoretical part of the course will include lectures, group discussions and seminars.

Assessment Methods

Oral examination. Pass/fail.

Minor adjustments may occur during the academic year, subject to the decision of the Dean
