Course Objectives

The course emphasises the practical aspects of Spanish. The main objective is to enable the student to acquire necessary skills in oral and written Spanish on the B2 level according to Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. Subject-didactics topics will be incorporated in the instruction, so that the knowledge may be used in teaching situations.

Course Description

The course requires active participation from all students in classroom discussions, individually and in group work. Through appropriate themes and the use of multimedia, students will acquire necessary language skills. They will become capable of participating in simple discussions on selected subjects. Translating texts, and assignments on morphology and syntax will be used to improve learning efficiency. Students will learn to understand the Spanish language and the cultural differences between Norway and Spanish-speaking countries as well as the differences between individual Spanish-speaking countries. They will learn the difference between a formal and informal conversation in Spanish. Students will also gain knowledge of Spanish-speaking countries’ cultures and communicative norms, both written and verbal, so that they will be able to draw the maximum benefit from dialogues in Spanish.

Learning Methods

Lectures in language, with relevance to the exercises in grammar and translation and English-Spanish and Spanish-English translation. Students are expected to devote considerable individual effort and participate actively in the course. Assessments of level and progress will be carried out at regular intervals. The language of instruction is Spanish.

Assessment Methods

The examination is divided into two parts:
A written examination of 4 hours, which represents 50% of the final grade.
An oral examination of up to 30 minutes duration, which represents 50% of the final grade.
Firstly, the examination includes a discussion in Spanish about a topic that has been covered in the course, and, secondly, the student will read and discuss Spanish texts.
Students must receive passing grades in both written and oral examinations to achieve a passing grade for the course. Grades from A to F, where E is the lowest passing grade.

Examination aids will be allowed in the written examination: Monolingual and bilingual dictionaries, which do not include information on Spanish grammar and conjugation; for example, either Diccionario Larousse del Español Moderno or Larousse Diccionario Práctico Español Moderno.
