Course Objectives
Students will become familiar with the theory and practice of mediation of the arts; develop an understanding of the role the mediation of the arts has in the art world, and become familiar with the policies and organization of the Norwegian art scene. Student will become familiar with the practical organisation of exhibitions and develop their ability to view, interpret and communicate the visual arts, with particular emphasis on contemporary art. In addition, students will improve their critical analysis skills regarding practices in the mediation of the arts.
Course Description
Art as a social phenomenon: Arts sociology, theory concerning practices related to mediation of the arts
Mediation of the arts in different arenas: theory and policy related to exhibitions
Ways of seeing, experiencing and interpreting art: Art theory with a focus on contemporary art. Writing and talking about art for different audiences
Art in Norway today: key organisations, management documents, and funding in the field of the arts
Learning Methods
Lectures and seminars; excursions; arranging art projects / exhibitions; presentation of written work and oral exercises.
Compulsory participation in excursions for the whole student group. Students who do not participate in excursions must write a report dealing with the subject material of the excursion.
Eighty percent participation is required in the scheduled art projects / art exhibitions. If students are absent for more than 20%, they will be orally examined on the course curriculum texts.
Assessment Methods
Obligatory mid-term written examination that counts for 40% of the final grade; this will take the form of a home assignment. Written individual 5-hour final examination which counts for 60%. Grades from A (best) to F (fail). The student must receive passing marks in both the assignment and the final examination in order to receive a final course grade. The student must also have their participation in the scheduled art projects / exhibitions approved, or have passed an oral examination; as well as approved participation in all the mandatory study trips in order to receive a final course grade.
