Mathematics for Computer Science 5501
Course Objectives
The course will provide students with a basis for working on different subjects in the study programme in which knowledge of mathematical analysis and methodology is important. Students will also gain insight into some topics which are relevant to the study of computer science.
Course Description
The course will provide students with an introduction to mathematical analysis; the course will first focus on a recap of the basic mathematical concepts and calculation techniques. For functions of one variable the course will consider: Differentiation, integration, curve sketching and optimisation. Further, the course will consider exponential and logarithmic functions and basic financial mathematics. Concerning functions of several variables, the course will focus on partial derivatives and extremal problems. In a separate module, the course will deal with the various number systems, computer internal storage and arithmetic.
Learning Methods
6-8 hours per week in the autumn semester.
Assessment Methods
Ongoing coursework assessment will consist of mandatory assignments that must be approved before students may sit the individual, 5-hour written examination.
Minor adjustments may occur during the academic year, subject to the decision of the Dean
