Course Objectives

The intention of the course is to strengthen students’ ability to write longer texts, particularly about literature, in correct and idiomatic English and to increase their understanding of how to achieve this aim.

Course Description

A satisfactory competence in English assumes the ability to produce long and coherent texts on a wide variety of subjects. This course will emphasise practical training in authoring well-formulated texts in varied contexts, with particular stress on literary essays.

Learning Methods

The instruction (two hours per week) combines lectures, seminars and workshops. Most of the actual writing will be done by students off-campus, while the regular teaching will mainly focus on theory, discussion and feedback on completed, submitted work, or work that is in the process of being written.

Assessment Methods

The assessment of the course is related to three assignments. The first assignment will not receive a lettered grade, but must receive a passing mark; students who are given a fail on this assignment will be given the opportunity to re-submit their work. The second assignment counts for 40%, and the third for 60% of the total course grade; it is not possible to re-submit. The last two assignments will be graded on a scale from A to F, where E is the lowest passing grade. All work must be submitted before deadlines that will be set at the beginning of the semester; all assignments must be completed in order to receive a final passing grade for the course.
