Course Objectives

The aim of this course is to develop insight into, understanding of and skills in the use of ICT equipment and software which is suitable for use in nurseries, schools and education-sector training. Emphasis will be placed on developing skills in the use of standard software, the Internet and the type of hardware used in schools. Much of the course will be carried out as practical assignment work.

Course Description

After completing the course students will:

• Be able to use the file manager and e-mail, and have good skills in the use of the relevant tools and software: Word processing, e-mail, web-page creation, spreadsheets, presentation software, video and photo editing, Web 2.0 (software online).
• Be able to develop information literacy in relation to using the Internet in teaching and learning and acquire knowledge of digital storytelling.
• Be able to use ICT as an aid in planning and managing their own studies; in future teaching positions, be able to use LMS (learning management systems) in administrative and educational contexts.
• Have good knowledge of the Internet’s organisation.
• Be able to work in a digital learning environment; use digital equipment in learning situations; and conduct other types of communication using the Internet.
• Be able to use multimedia equipment, graphics, images, audio and video.
• Be able to use software for audio, image and video editing.
• Be aware of the relevant free software and online resources.
• Be able to install software that is appropriate for use in nurseries and schools.
• Be able to master the basic concepts related to ICT.
• Be able to explain the computer’s structure and function.
• Be able to produce digital learning materials.
• Be able to master digital communication in various contexts and use ICT on a daily basis.

Learning Methods

The course will be organised as online lectures and workshops; more information will be provided in the semester schedule.

Assessment Methods

Work Portfolio
Before students may sit the examination, they must first have their work portfolio approved; the portfolio should include the following:

• Word processing
• Presentation software
• Spreadsheets
• Creating websites and publishing on the Internet, Web 2.0
• Digital storytelling
• Making and editing video
• Image editing
  Examination
  Individual, written examination of 6 hours. The exam is organized as a practical test with a PC.
  Aids: the Internet is available, but students are not permitted to communicate with others.
