Practical Training Studies: Child Welfare Work 070-E6

Course Objectives

After completing course 6 students will:

Knowledge
• have acquired knowledge of practical methodological work in area of child welfare
• have gained knowledge of culture and ethnicity in practice
• have acquired knowledge of the legal frameworks in different arenas

Skills
• be able to identify value conflicts, reflect on ethical issues and adopt an ethical plan of action through practical training
• be able to recognise methods and understand the use of relational skills and strategies in the practical execution of methodological child welfare work

Professional competence
• understand the relationship between practical experience, theoretical knowledge and reflection in professional practice
• understand the importance of respect for human integrity and rights in professional practice

Practical training studies will provide students with experience in methodological child care work; they will be challenged to demonstrate professional, personal and ethical reflection and to evaluate their personal knowledge, attitudes and skills. The practical training will help students to develop professional skills which they will need in their future careers. In terms of work load, the practical studies correspond to 16 ECTS of course 6.

Course Description

The content of the course is based on the national curriculum’s requirements regarding the distribution of credits, which function as a guideline for the clarification for the course plan.

Scientific theory and research methods - 1 ECTS credit; sociology and social anthropology - 1 ECTS credit; child welfare law and other areas of law - 1 ECTS credit; general, developmental and social psychology - 3 ECTS credits; clinical psychology and mental health - 2 ECTS credits; paediatrics and social medicine - 1 ECTS credit; social pedagogy- 4 ECTS credits; ethics and professional roles - 2 ECTS credits; communication, interaction and conflict resolution - 3 ECTS credits; child care initiatives - 1 ECTS credit; community work - 2 ECTS credits; activities subjects - 5 ECTS credits; working with groups, organizations and networks - 4 ECTS credits.

Learning Methods

Lectures; group work; role playing; reflection work; communication and coordination exercises; and practical training studies. Practical training studies include preparation and concluding practical training seminars.

Assessment Methods

Course code: 070-E6: Practical training studies: Methodological child welfare work – assessment assignment

An individual assignment that requires understanding of student learning outcomes in practical training studies (4500 words). Graded mark.
There will be as many as four course requirements, where one is the approval of practical training. Course requirements must be approved before the completion of the course can be approved. The course requirements are described in the course plan.
