Course Objectives

After completing course 8 students will:
Knowledge
• have knowledge and understanding of cultural, individual and social causes of marginalisation and social problems
• be able to apply important concepts within child welfare to identify and understand children and adolescents at risk, and their life situations
• have a broad knowledge of various forms of help and care initiatives at municipal and state levels
Skills
• be able to assess children and young people’s life situations based on relevant knowledge and contribute to the implementation of measures in their best interests
• be able to consider various social pedagogical methods and the use of activities in intervention work
Competence
• be able to assess the possibilities and limitations of child welfare initiatives with regard to marginalized children and adolescents
• have insight into communication processes and their importance for cooperation and conflict management in interactions with children, adolescents and their parents

Course Description

The content of the course is based on the national curriculum’s requirements regarding the distribution of credits, which functions as a guideline for the clarification of the course plan.

Sociology and anthropology - 1 ECTS credit; child welfare law and other areas of law - 1 ECTS credit; clinical psychology and mental health - 1 ECTS credit; paediatrics and social medicine - 1 ECTS credit; general and special pedagogy - 1 ECTS credit; social pedagogy - 1 ECTS credit; ethics and professional roles - 1 ECTS credit; communication, interaction and conflict resolution - 1 ECTS credit; child care initiatives - 2 ECTS credits; community work - 3 ECTS credits; activities subject - 2 ECTS credits.

Learning Methods

Self-study, lectures, use of tutorials and presentations, practical skills training and the use of activities and communication exercises.

Assessment Methods

Course code: 070-E8: Implementing measures in child welfare – assessment assignment including an oral examination. The response will demonstrate the student’s competence in the assessment of child and adolescent behavioural and care situations as a basis for the choice of a methodological approach. Individual responses. 4000 words. Graded marks.
Individual oral examination based on the knowledge foundation of the second year of study and the student’s understanding of their own subject. The written part of the assessment task 8-1 must be passed in order to qualify to sit the oral examination. The final grade is determined after the oral examination. The oral examination is primarily an adjustment to the grade of the written assignment. It is possible to give the candidate a grade of “fail” on the basis of the oral examination.
There may be as many as two required course assignments, which must be approved before the completion of the course can be approved. The course requirements are described in the course plan.

Minor adjustments may occur during the academic year, subject to the decision of the Dean
